Mobile + Lighter Build
RPi 5 platform — lighter, cheaper, same architecture
The pragmatic build. Raspberry Pi 5 instead of Jetson, YDLIDAR X4 instead of RPLIDAR — same conceptual stack at ~55% of the cost. Ideal when ML inference runs on a cloud endpoint or a companion GPU device. Lighter chassis means fewer terrain restrictions.
- Raspberry Pi 5 8GB — PCIe Gen 2, dual USB 3.0
- Luxonis OAK-D Lite — spatial depth on USB3
- YDLIDAR X4 — 10m range, 6000 samples/sec
- Acrylic chassis — target sub-1.5kg total weight
- ROS2 Iron on Ubuntu 22.04 — tested build
- 45min active runtime, hot-swap 3S LiPo design

Engineering Review
Human-validated before this BOM ships. Every point checked on reference hardware.
Peak 25W: RPi5 12W + OAK-D 2.5W + YDLIDAR 1.5W + motors 6W + misc 3W. 3S 3200mAh @ 80% DoD ≈ 46min. Plan on 40min operational.
Waveshare UPS module verified: 25W sustained output from 11.1V 3S input. Tested through startup surge (6.5W peak at boot). Graceful shutdown GPIO wired.
Estimated build weight: 1.18kg. Chassis 390g + motors 2×120g + battery 195g + electronics 355g. Within envelope for N20 motor torque budget.
YDLIDAR X4: 10m range vs. RPLIDAR A1 5.5m — better coverage at lower cost. Angular resolution 0.48° at 6000Hz. Confirmed with ydlidar_ros2_driver.
RPi5 USB-A 3.0 measured at 4.8Gbps. OAK-D at 4K/30fps needs ~3.2Gbps. 1.6Gbps headroom for other peripherals. Tested under ROS2 load.
RPi5 CPU throttles at 85°C under sustained nav2 + DepthAI load. Official Raspberry Pi Active Cooler required — add to BOM if not already on hand.
Continuous ROS2 bag writes exhaust consumer SD cards within 3–6 months. SanDisk MAX Endurance 128GB (30K write cycles) recommended as minimum.
This kit has no downward-facing sensors. Only deploy on flat, bounded floors. To add cliff detection: wire 2× HC-SR04 facing down to RPi5 GPIO and set a 5cm threshold.
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS + ROS2 Iron + DepthAI 2.24.0 + ydlidar_ros2_driver 1.1.2. All packages integration-tested on Pi5 hardware. Build time ~22min from flash.
RPi5 CE ×2, FCC ID 2ABCB-RPI5. YDLIDAR X4 CE certified. OAK-D Lite FCC ID 2AOKL-OAK-D-LITE. Integration review optional for public deployment.
